Los Angeles Burns & Goodbye TikTok?

there's just something about Januarys...

Field Notes: There’s Just Something About Januarys ✏️

The LA fires have been devastating. My prayers go out to anyone who has been impacted by the fires. Judging from the conversations I’ve had with friends and this community, most people who live in LA know at least several families who have lost their homes or have had family members who have lost theirs. There are no words to justify this level of devastation. If you’d like to help or donate, please see the link here that has resources and donation centers that are currently accepting donations.

I was thinking about how the month of January can be a a “come-down” month since the jolliness of the holidays are over, and the gears shift pretty substantially without the promise of warm weather or some other type of distraction. I was thinking about the past few Januarys and why they’ve had a certain heaviness to them. Just a quick recap of what I’m remembering:

Jan 2020- Kobe Bryant died in the helicopter accident and this was the early, early days of the pandemic / Jan 2021- the insurrection at the Capitol building / Jan 2022- Omnicron variant surges to all time highs, US numbers of COVID reach all-time highs / Jan 2025- the LA fires

And of course, you could easily make similar historical reference across different months and years, but January sticks out to me in this way because of the juxtaposition of the holidays to boom-hit-you-in-the-face reality. My ask is that you hug your loved ones extra tight over the next few weeks because if this situation has reminded us of anything, it’s that your world can change in an instant.

The Insurance Crisis That Will Follow the LA Fires ✍️🏚️ In 2019, the number of homeowners’ policies in California that were not renewed jumped by more than thirty per cent. In 2023, two giant insurers, State Farm and Allstate, announced that they would stop writing new policies for various forms of property insurance in California. State Farm said the move came in response to inflation and “rapidly growing catastrophe exposure.” Last summer, it cancelled coverage for more than fifteen hundred homes in Pacific Palisades, the wealthy enclave where the first LA fire began. Now, the damages from the LA fire are estimated to go up to $150 billion. (the new yorker)
